"My curiosity was insatiable. I wanted to know what made him tick; why he dressed like a down and out Teddy boy when his home and his background were decidedly middle class.

John would explain that if you looked hard then there was more chance of survival when you came across a gang of tough guys. If you looked like them they were less likely to batter you than if you were dressed in arty gear and glasses. John was a self-confessed coward, but if he was really pushed he could fight as dirty as his attackers and frequently did in the old days. On the other hand, he would use every trick in the book to avoid confrontation. If you’d ever come across a bunch of rough-necks in Liverpool, you’d find it easy enough to understand John’s strategy - it was a case of the survival of the fittest.”
